26.08.2018. Whirlpool of Whales

Somehow, although the University of Alaska Southeast has a whale in its logo, the student ID card is called a whalecard and part of the mandatory student orientation was whale watching, it hadn't really occurred to me before that there are actual whales in the vicinity. Like, whales. I knew there'd be a lot of bears (wandering on and off campus), deer and moose (wandering even more).
Yesterday, as we embarked on a boat to go whale watching, it finally dawned upon me. Whales!

Indeed, some splashed their tails and backs at us. Furthermore, approaching what initially seemed to be a huge pile of rocks, it turned out to be a large pack of sea lions, crawling on top of each other and
NOT rocks!
making the sounds my stomach makes when I've not eaten for a while. Oh, by the way, we saw a lot of eagles and seals on the boat trip as well. Never seen any of those in the wild.

There are more things I'd never seen in the wild as well. Bears, for one. Porcupines. (They are MASSIVE, not smol and cute, as I'd thought before!) Badgers. A great variety of jays and other songbirds. And, most importantly, a close-knit community.
Whales, reportedly, are known to learn from each other, work in teams, and have close bonds. Honestly, at the moment our behaviour is quite similar. We, a group of 18 national and 4 international exchange students, have been staring at glaciers, wild animals, playing silly games and making weird food closely together. (I tried Mac n Cheese for the first time in my life. Sorry, folks. Kinda gross.)
Nope.

I'm well aware this is the honeymoon phase. Still, so far I am absolutely in love with this place. It's a bit difficult for me to adapt to big crowds - especially, the American loudness. I'll get used to it little by little. The people I've met so far seem wonderful, friendly, and funny. The places... well, they take my breath away every time I see them. Take a look.

We've been extremely busy as it's Orientation week. Classes start tomorrow. Today, we're going downtown. Breaching like whales.
